Promises, Promises – From American History and REAL ID Last month of the legislative session. |
April 12, 2017 #First_Name#, The People are supposed to be in charge of the government they created. Indeed, no government has ever been able to stand without the consent or acquiescence of the People, even despotic regimes. And that is why governments make promises that they can not or have no intention of keeping.
One of the more interesting and instructive examples is the promise Lord Dunmore, governor of colonial Virginia, made to the slaves of that colony on November 7, 1775. He told them they would be given their freedom if they would run away from their rebelling masters and join the British army. Thousands took him up on that offer, but, alas, the offer did not apply to the fighting men's families. The war in Virginia did not go well for the British, and they had to retreat. Good for the escaped slaves, who now would be free and also avoid the war, right? No, because Lord Dunmore reneged on his promise. He kept several hundred of the strongest men conscripted and sent the rest back into slavery in Florida and the West Indies. No slavery was good, but the slaves of Virginia had much better lives than those of the West Indies. Out of the pan and into the fire. And so it is with the Missouri General Assembly and REAL ID. In 2009, they passed a law protecting Missourians' from a national ID card that everyone was sure would end up with RFID and the collection of biometric data. Now some of the same office holders and a lot of new ones want to renege. They want the People to accept a NEW PROMISE. The new promise is wrapped in a “choice”: Missouri will capitulate to the federal REAL ID scheme (which is voluntary, by the way), but Missourians can chose between the old driver's license and the new REAL ID compliant card. They further promise that Missouri's card will not have an RFID chip in it, and they won't collect biometic data. Sure. Government programs almost ALWAYS expand and, after the style of Lord Dunmore, government regularly breaks its promises. ![]() You can bet that it is only a matter of time before another set of Missouri office holders will tell us the sky will fall unless we eliminate the choice of cards and accept RFID chips in our REAL ID cards. The Missouri House of Representatives have already reneged on the promise, now HB 151, the REAL ID capitulation bill, is in the Senate. Call your Senator and tell them to just say “no” to REAL ID capitulation!
